Record No.38
The 38th entry in Daido Moriyama’s ‘Record’ series.
Moriyama originally started ‘Record’ in 1972, self-publishing five issues before the project was put on hold in 1973. In 2006, encouraged by Akio Nagasawa, Moriyama brought the project back to life as a regular outlet for his photography.
Record 38 features a strong series of Moriyama’s typical street photography: street scenes, details, crowd shots and moments forever hidden were it not for Moriyama’s precise use of the camera. In the afterword, Moriyama reflects on his influences and the subjects he chooses to photograph:
“My memories of wandering from one town to another for a while after the war have piled up at the bottom of my conscious mind, and it appears to me that they are reflected in the myriad images I’ve been capturing as a street snap photographer […] The time we call the “present” is always linked to both the past and the future, and today is nothing but a connector between yesterday and tomorrow.”
