Daido Moriyama’s “Tiles in Aizuwakamatsu” is the eighth entry in a series of hand-bound photobooks featuring a canvas silk-screen printed cover, following “Boku”, “Lips! Lips! Lips!”, “Tights in Shimotakaido”, “Pantomime”, “Plastic Love”, “Kura Chan” and “Kanban”.
During a shooting trip in the Fukushima region, Moriyama was mesmerized by the tiled bathroom of an inn in Aizuwakamatsu. While seven of Moriyama’s photographs were originally published in 1987 in the Japanese magazine “Shashin Jidai” under the title “Utsukushii Shashin no Tsukurikata” (lit. “How to Create Beautiful Photographs”), this publication features the full series, including many previously unpublished photographs.
