Daido Moriyama: A Retrospective
This catalogue accompanies the 2023 touring exhibition “Daido Moriyama: A Retrospective” (Sao Paolo, Berlin, London, Helsinki, Lausanne, Vienna).
Thyago Nogueira, curator of the exhibition and editor of this publication, selected more than 190 images to look back at every stage of Daido Moriyama’s long career, from his early works published in photography magazines to his first photobooks and masterworks, the difficult 1970s, up to his recent work. Further, “Daido Moriyama: A Retrospective” features more than 400 spreads from Moriyama’s seemingly infinite number of publications, as well as a full chronology of Moriyama’s life and work.
Texts by Thyago Nogueira, Yui Mitsuda, Masako Toda and Masashi Kohara, as well as an afterword by the artist himself, provide further information and context on Moriyama’s oeuvre (all texts in English).
“Daido Moriyama, with a career spanning almost sixty years, transformed the way we see photography. In the early 1960s, from the first snaps of the shutter, he employed his camera to question the world and used his reflections as the raw material from which to develop his images. My goal upon beginning this study was to understand how the photographic thinking of a prolific and long-lived artist changed over time, and how the seeds he sowed on his path enriched the photographic language of Japan and of the world.”
