The Books of Nobuyoshi Araki
“Nobuyoshi Araki is one of the most influential and controversial Japanese artists today. Though his work is well-known also beyond audiences commonly interested in photography, the variety and complexity of his oeuvre sometimes tends to be overseen in the general reception.”
— from the publisher’s description
This publication accompanies the exhibition “Arakiss” at Galerie WestLicht in Vienna (May 19–August 1, 2021). As the name suggests, the book celebrates the oeuvre of one of Japan’s most prolific photographers through his numerous photobooks published over the past 60 years of his career.
Organized into chronological chapters and supplied with texts and additional information, “The Books of Nobuyoshi Araki” introduces Araki’s most important books in detail, including the very first publications photocopied in the offices of advertising company Dentsu. In tone, the publication manages to strike a balance between archive and celebration of Araki’s artistic achievements, with numerous short essays offering context and interpretations. The back of the book includes an index of over 300 of Araki’s photobooks.
