He started photographing when he was 16 years old. He also studied painting but later chose gelatin silver print as his media. His first gallery show in the U.S. was in 1994 in San Francisco. In 1996 he had a solo exhibition at Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York. His works have been shown in Europe since 2006. Besides Japan, U.S.A., and Europe, his museum and gallery exhibitions were held in Moscow Sao Paulo. Media coverage includes NY Times and other major art magazines. Yamamoto lives in Yatsugatake Nanroku,Yamanashi Prefecture where he enjoys creating his work while being close to nature.

This is a selection of six images by Japanese photographer Masao Yamamoto on the theme of birds, printed in collotype by Kyoto-based print manufacturer Benrido. The photographs have been selected by Masao Yamamoto himself, and have not been previously published. The mini-portfolio encapsulates the essence of Yamamoto’s artistic practice, preserved as breathtaking collotype prints.

Collotype, one of the oldest techniques of creating photographic prints, is a pigment-based process. The technique is revered for its excellent reproducibility, the smoothness and depth of its textures and its strong durability. It is often employed for the reproduction of important cultural works. Benrido, founded in 1905 in Kyoto, is one of the most experienced collotype printing studios in the world.
