6 Collotype Prints

This is a selection of six images by Japanese photographer Masao Yamamoto on the theme of birds, printed in collotype by Kyoto-based print manufacturer Benrido. The photographs have been selected by Masao Yamamoto himself, and have not been previously published. The mini-portfolio encapsulates the essence of Yamamoto’s artistic practice, preserved as breathtaking collotype prints.

Collotype, one of the oldest techniques of creating photographic prints, is a pigment-based process. The technique is revered for its excellent reproducibility, the smoothness and depth of its textures and its strong durability. It is often employed for the reproduction of important cultural works. Benrido, founded in 1905 in Kyoto, is one of the most experienced collotype printing studios in the world.
