VARIOUS SHAPED HOSES AND SNAKE
Edward Ruscha’s photography, serialised in artist books from the 1960s and 1970s, have had a large influence on subsequent photographers. They spawned a variety of homages from countries all over the world, as well as being the subject of re-interpretations, parodies and imitations. Ruscha, by accepting the more than 100 works citing his work and its titles, indirectly extended the scope of his original techniques and subject matter.
In 2014, Yoshihisa Tanaka, Takashi Homma and the POST bookshop have started their own homage series to Edward Ruscha, so far spawning the books "Nine Swimming Pools", "Various Covered Automobiles And Snow", "Thirtyfour Parking Lots" and "Scandinavian Mushrooms".
"Various Shaped Hoses and Snake", the current title in the series, centers around photographs taken by Homma during the past year. While the technique is an imitation of Ruscha’s 1964 book "Various Small Fires", the images focus on themes that Ruscha had not set his eyes upon, the fifth series installment attempts its own adaption of the original by focusing on themes not examined by Ruscha.
Parallel to the publication of the book, POST will host an exhibition of the material from July 22 until August 17.
We invite you to enjoy this ode in reply to Ruscha, an ongoing homage series whose shape is re-formed with each publication.
