The Wooded Tokyo
To me these are the oasis that offer brief moments of respite.
Occasionally I might chance upon (goodness, here? of all places!)
a deep forest in the middle of the city, and through my encounters
with all these trees I could discern the manifold aspects of Tokyo.
Although it has been a long process, shooting these photographs
has been a pleasurable time.
- Artist statement
For his first photobook, Naohiru Yasui spent 20 years photographing the trees settled firmly into the urban Tokyo landscape, as communal places, as part of the scenery, as defiance against the concrete. It is by looking at these trees that one of Tokyo’s many sides quietly emerges into view.
