The Liquid Night

The Liquid Night

Bill HENSON

Publisher: Stanley / Barker

In 1989, Bill Henson (then in his 30s) spent his nights photographing the streets around Times Square in New York City, drop off the negatives at 24h development labs, pick them up and go home to sleep. Collected in the photobook “The Liquid Night,” Henson’s work forms an atmospheric, kaleidoscopic pastiche of a now-lost nightly America. Neon lights, taxis, blurred faces, billboards, vibrant colors, diners, cafes and image noise, prostitutes, night workers, partygoers and bohemians: “This is the work of a photographer of genius recreating the discardable mystery of his past” (Peter Craven).
