Originally published to commemorate the retrospective of Saul Leiter’s work held at Haus der Photographie in Hamburg, Germany in 2012, this updated publication traces Leiter’s photographic work and his paintings in nine themed chapters. Each chapter features an in-depth essay (e.g., about Leiter’s early photographic work, his nudes, his color photography, his fashion photography, his use of the street as a stage etc.) written by photography historians, curators, writers, artists and Saul Leiter himself, as well as relevant photographs and paintings by Leiter. With its wealth of images and information, “Saul Leiter: Retrospektive” not only traces Leiter’s life between photography and painting but also explores the fascination of his art.
