Early Color
The photobook Early Color, first published in 2006, was the first book to introduce Saul Leiter’s color photography to the world. It features photographs Leiter took in New York between 1948 and 1960 (Leiter’s photography was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1953, to then remain virtually unknown until the mid-2000s), showcasing Leiter’s magnificent, well-considered use of color.
“His openness to the accidental, and the willingness to forgo the photographer’s legendary control are crucial components of Leiter’s ethos, anticipating precepts that remained exceptional, even among photography’s avant-garde, until the advent of postmodernism in the 1970s” — from Martin Harrison’s foreword
