Reflex
For his “Reflex” series, Japanese photographer Kenta Cobayashi manipulates, mashes, collages and processes images taken in Tokyo’s Ginza district. Following research into the fashion and visual representations of Ginza from before and after World War II, Cobayashi superimposes multiple images of the building facades in one of Tokyo’s most iconic areas to create images situated between photography and graphic design, expressing an energy, vibration and inherent flow that is invisible to the eye. Despite the many distortions, Ginza’s unique character remains alive and recognizable, is perhaps even enhanced and accentuated. Cobayashi’s manipulation-heavy approach pushes against the inherited boundaries of photography to find and express new truths and transcend dichotomies unfit for the current age.
