A gloomy, atmospheric time capsule of late 80s Osaka

The photographs in "Osaka (Red)" were originally taken by Hideki Sato in 1989 and 1990. Initially, Sato pursued the project with Shigeo Goto (who designed and published this photobook), but soon continued on his own, lugging a heavy Fuji panorama camera around Osaka and capturing the city's atmosphere. More than thirty years later, the strong, almost cinematic sense of the city's nature in Sato's photographs has only grown stronger. "Osaka (Red)" contains approximately 51 photographs, selected from a pool of 200. There are two other editions ("Yellow" and "Blue") of his Osaka series, each composed of different photographs.

“After finishing the shoot, I always ended up having a deep drink at my favorite restaurant, always waking up at nearly noon. After eating udon, I head towards my destination. And if you look closely, you’ll notice many photos were taken when the sun is setting. It was rather satisfying. When night fell, I drank again and looked at my map to find a destination for the next day. Even if I had a hangover or was exhausted, I didn’t slack off and just walked around the city taking photos. These are the best and worst photos documenting the city of Osaka, and I like them a lot!”
― from Hideki Sato’s afterword
