Front III (North China, Philippines, India, Wartime Tokyo)
This is the third of three reprint volumes of the Japanese war propaganda magazine "FRONT" originally published by Tohosha between 1942 and 1945 in close cooperation with the Imperial Japanese government and military. This archival reprint edition is based on Heibonsha's 1989 publication "FRONT III".
"FRONT III" contains four issues: "North China," "Philippines," "India," and "Wartime Tokyo. While "FRONT" was created by some of Japan's leading designers, editors, and photographers (including Ihei Kimura and Hiroshi Hamaya) and is valuable for its innovative photography and graphic design, its purpose was to disseminate propaganda in support of Imperial Japan's war effort. In the "Philippines" and "India" issues, respectively, the different approaches to persuading and influencing other countries become apparent (e.g., appealing to the independence of the Philippines or highlighting Britain's weaknesses and losses in the war).
While the four original issues are reprinted without editorial changes, "FRONT III" concludes with several essays by historians and critics such as Masao Yamaguchi, Yukichi Amano, Seiichi Tagawa, Kikuo Nakano, and many more.
Please note that these texts are in Japanese only. The included FRONT issues feature Chinese, English, and Japanese language.
