Front II (Imperial Japanese Army, Paratrooper, Iron)
This is an archival reprint based on Heibonsha’s 1989 publication “FRONT II,” part of three-part collection of the Japanese war propaganda magazine FRONT, published between 1942 and 1945 by Tohosha in close cooperation with the Japanese government and military.
“FRONT II” consists of three issues of FRONT about the Imperial Japanese Army, the paratroopers, and the metal industry powering Imperial Japan’s war. Published to represent and disseminate the ideology and self-image of Imperial Japan, the texts in the magazine are in English (and occasionally in Chinese).
In addition to its value as a historical artifact, this reprint may also be of interest to enthusiasts and researchers of Japanese graphic design and photography. The original magazine was produced by some of Japan’s most innovative designers, editors and photographers, such as Ihei Kimura, who continued to influence the visual culture of post-war Japan.
“FRONT II” concludes with several contextualizing essays by Seiichi Tagawa, Shunkichi Kikuchi, Takeshi Imaizumi, Kazuo Okada, and Takao Yamamuro. Please note that these essays are in Japanese only.
