50U, 50 Years United Arab Emirates
Published in 2021, the year of the 50th anniversary of the confederation of the United Arab Emirates, “50U – 50 Years United Arab Emirates” celebrates the unique journey of the seven Gulf states in 50 portraits of people, plants and places. Through the eyes of UAE inhabitants and relevant figures—from artists and architects (like Farah Al Qasimi, Eve Arnold and Rem Koolhaas) to business founders, bakers, tailors, astronauts, designers, folk poetry researchers and fishermen—the book traces the 50-year long development of a partly nomadic community into the current modern state in interviews, photographs and a number of essays.
“What started as a conversation amongst family and friends between Dubai and Amsterdam, led us here to the launch of a collection of tales. Our hope for the book is that it honors our past, documents our present, and is used in the future as a tool for cultural exchange.”
