Radiation Buscape

Radiation Buscape

Shozaburo ISHIDA

Publisher: IG Photo Gallery

On March 3, 2011, the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake caused a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Five years later, in 2016, photographer and lawyer Shozaburo Ishida photographed the regions affected by the radiation from the window of a bus on National Highway 6, running as a replacement for the discontinued railway service.
The radiation itself is visible; it won’t appear in photographs either. But the effect of the radiation is bound to appear in the landscapes of Ishida’s photos. The view you see from the bus passes by and disappears somewhere behind you. But what will become visible if I take a picture of that view?
