Roe ETHRIDGE

1995年、アトランタ芸術大学で美術学士号を取得。2年後にニューヨークに移り、コマーシャル・フォトグラファーとして活動を開始。この間、ハイウェイの中央分離帯の樹木をカタログ化したシリーズを制作し、ドイツの客観写真の類型への関心を、アメリカのオープンロードの現実（と神話）に適用しようとした。タフで、スマートで、コンセプチュアル」な写真の試みであったと振り返るこのプロジェクトに取り組んでいたとき、エスリッジは『Allure』誌に寄稿したビューティ・エディトリアルのアウトテイクが「『アーティスト』として意図的に制作したものと同等かそれ以上」であることに気づいた。アンディ・ウォーホルやリー・フリードランダーの芸術的アプローチに魅了されたことが、エスリッジの作品の特徴となっている。このハイブリッドなアプローチの成果は、2000年にMoMA PS1の「Greater New York」で初めて展示され、Allureの撮影からのアウトテイクと、エスリッジが撮影したUPSストアの写真が対になって展示された。
