You Will Look To The Mountains
“And you will look to the mountains
And the mountains will look to you
And you will wish you were a mountain
And the mountain will wish nothing at all?
― excerpt of Carl Sandburg’s “And This Will Be All?” used as the foreword
“You Will Look To The Mountains” encapsulates the first series Anne Rearick made away from home. In the summer of 1989, Rearick stayed with a friend’s family in a small settlement in eastern Kentucky and captured life and culture in the Appalachian Mountains in photographs that are both documentary and uniquely personal in nature. In portraits and occasional landscapes, Rearick simply describes—without unnecessary rhetoric, lyricism or affectation—the reality of an everyday life carved out in close relation to nature, with its hardships, boredoms, and moments of beauty.
