Under Vancouver 1972-1982
“Under Vancouver 1972-1982” collects images taken by Greg Girard in Vancouver, during the time when the city was but a port town at the end of a railway line.
While the photographs – both monochrome and in vivid, vibrant colors – follow the interests of a young Girard in the city he grew up in, they already show Girard’s preference for the hidden parts, the underbellies, of the places he visits. Although not originally intended, these photographs also possess a historical value, depicting a Vancouver before it became known to the world (i.e. through the 1986 Expo) and changed forever.
“Under Vancouver 1972-1982” concludes with a dialogue between Greg Girard and legendary Vancouver-based science fiction author William Gibson.
