HK:PM, Hong Kong Night Life 1974-1989
With “HK:PM, Hong Kong Night Life 1974-1989”, Greg Girard presents a visual ode to Hong Kong, in photographs taken during Girard’s fifteen years in the city between 1974 and 1989.
Dissatisfied with the photographic representations of Hong Kong, Girard tried to capture the city according to his own preferences in photographs that Hong Kong-born director Ann Hui calls “highly stylized visuals of what I remember from the 70s and 80s” in her foreword.
Girard captured life in Hong Kong in all its facets: people at work and at play, during the days and during the nights. Each image is able to stand on its own, but viewed as a series they paint a concise image of a now bygone era in the city’s history.
“While making these pictures in the 1970s and 80s I was guided to some degree by the notion that they should be revealing somehow, not just to myself or other visitors, but to people who knew Hong Kong.”
