Sunset
In "Sunset," Ryuichi Ishikawa spent two hours in the evening standing in front of a brick wall in Seoul's Seongsu-dong, photographing those who passed between the wall and his camera. Although simple in its outline, Ishikawa's "Sunset" captures a striking portrait of a dynamic and drastically changing area of Seoul, where former factories and residential buildings have been transformed into trendy cafes, restaurants, and fashion stores. Young people wearing the latest fashions and older people who lived through the horrors of the Korean War walk in front of the same wall, casting increasingly long shadows as the sun continues to set.
“A brick wall that evokes history, decorated with overlapping shadows from nearby trees.
Perhaps I sought salvation in the apparent meaning of it all.
Wandering bodies; the stripping away of intellect; the ghosts that connect them.
Consumerism means a disappearance of meaning, an endless transformation of matter, an inflation of energy.”
― from Ryuichi Ishikawa's afterword (translation by shashasha)
