The fifth issue of the Tokyo-based photography magazine “Sha Shin”, entitled “Faces,” focuses on the human face. Beginning with series by Shingo Kanagawa, Ika Ryu, Shinya Arimoto, Risaku Suzuki, Haruto Hoshi and Ayaka Yamamoto, the magazine explores the complexities of the human face in contemporary photography, from its role in portraiture to the possibilities of abstract symbolism and the challenges of authenticity in the age of image-generating AI software. Interviews and essays by leading artists and critics (including Taka Kawachi, Ken Ohyama, Sei Ko, Jun Mitsuhashi) pursue these issues at greater depth, while reports and reviews of recent photobooks and exhibitions provide readers with an overview of the current state of photography in Japan.

All artists’ statements as well as essays by Ken Ohyama, Manabu Torihara and Kotaru Iizawa are included in English translation.
