Shot between 1982 and 1990 in working-class towns and cities in Connecticut, USA, the photographs in Mark Steinmetz’ photobook “Rivers & Towns” portrays individuals and communities in locations past their heydays. With Steinmetz’ characteristic use of light and shadow, these photographs manage to capture and show us something of the subjects’ inner lives. In images that offer questions rather than answers, Steinmetz values the ordinary over the extraordinary and, through the course of the book, maps out a careful sense of displacement and isolation.
