NONO – a native Spirit of Kami and Cloth
NONO – a native Spirit of Kami and Cloth
COSMIC WONDER, Kogei Punks Sha
Publisher: Akaaka Art Publishing
The catalogue “Nono – A native Spirit of Kami and Cloth” was published on occasion of the exhibition of the same titled held at the Iwami Arts Museum March-May 2021.
Organized by the Japan-based group “Cosmic Wonder with Kogei Punks Sha,” both exhibition and book examine natural fibers and fabrics and the many different materials, fabrics and clothes that can be made with them. Featuring tools and items that go back to the prehistoric Jomon period, “Nono – A native Spirit of Kami and Cloth” does not simply marvel at the ingenuity and craftsmanship of past generations but instead looks towards the future. In re-examining the past, the book aims to explore possible visions for more harmonious, more fruitful, more sustainable ways to live on planet earth.
“Today, we have come to a stage where we need to reevaluate the relationship we have between nature and man. In exchange for our convenient lifestyles, we have contaminated the planet and altered our environment perhaps to the point of no return. On the other hand, the way our lives pass along, with the energy provided by this earth, will not change no matter what period we live in.
What do they show us now, these fabrics that exist from the times we were nurtured by the nature around us and cherished what we had? In present times, where there is an abundance of information, the future options we can choose from may be reflected in the very presence of these natural fabrics and handmade papers.”
― from the foreword
In addition to photographs of the exhibited items, “Nono – A native Spirit of Kami and Cloth” features several essays (in Japanese & English) and an account of the “Nono Omizue,” a unique ceremony that includes listening to the sound of paper and being served water and sweets.
