Liminal (Eyes) Yamagami (Wave)
In “Liminal (Eyes)”, Japanese photographer Shimpei Yamagami explores the abstract within the real and the real within the abstract. His photographs of waves of the sea in his home town of Kamakura, presented in black and white, ooze with solitude, unresolved tension and an inquisitive stance towards the act of photography itself.
“Yamagami’s path as a photographer can be understood as an ongoing struggle to expand his territory, an there certainly aren’t many other photographers out there at the moment, even on the international stage, who confront photography and explore its meanings with all of their body as seriously as this man does. In times like these, with people drowning in floods of images and information, and developing some sort of frigidity towards seeing in general, Yamagami continues to choose photography as a way of life …”
