Peeling City
Sho Niiro’s latest photobook was taken in and around Tokyo in the ten years between 2007 and 2017.
“In this superficial society, a camera permits its owner for just an instant to scoop out an aspect that should not be shown to other people […] Intent on collecting these fragments and revealing the essence of society, I have released the shutter in order to strip away false masks and capture the truth that has been driven below the surface by the pressure of society.” — from Sho Niiro’s statement
“When we carefully peel pff the surface of this gorgeous city through the medium of these photographs, we find a domain of profound darkness spreading out before us. The act of paying greater attention to the depths of that domain must not cease at this point.” — from Kotaro Iizawa’s afterword
