The Tenth Anniversary Edition of Rinko Kawauchi’s seminal photobook “Illuminance” presents the keenly observed gestures, quotidian detail, and a finely honed palette of the original publication in unchanged sequence, in an entirely new design by Dutch graphic designer Hans Gremmen.

In “Illuminance”, Kawauchi continues her exploration of the extraordinary in the mundane, drawn to the fundamental cycles of life and the seemingly inadvertent, fractal-like organization of the natural world into formal patterns. Within these glances, one finds both beauty and sadness. These sights transcend time and place and ask us to reconsider: What is ubiquity? What is universal? Through the work, viewers find a new door opening within the world that we see – with sublime and gentle grace.
