“Early Works 1997” is a selection of six photographs by Rinko Kawauchi, printed in collotype by Kyoto-based print manufacturer Benrido.
The six works have been selected by Kawauchi from her solo exhibition “Utatane” at Guardian Garden in Tokyo in 1998. Many of the photographs created and exhibited during this period of Kawauchi’s career were never made available to the wider public through photobooks.
This collotype mini-portfolio offers a beautiful glimpse at the starting point of Kawauchi’s photographic career.

Collotype, one of the oldest techniques of creating photographic prints, is a pigment-based process. The technique is revered for its excellent reproducibility, the smoothness and depth of its textures and its strong durability. It is often employed for the reproduction of important cultural works. Benrido, founded in 1905 in Kyoto, is one of the most experienced collotype printing studios in the world.
