Giger Sorayama
This catalogue, published to commemorate the “H.R. Giger x Sorayama” exhibition that toured Japan between 2020 and 2021, brings together the works by two of the most significant science fiction artists of the 20th century.
Presented in a large format, the book invites readers to examine the individual worlds created by Sorayama and Giger but also juxtaposes and contrasts the creative visions of these two exceptional artists, stimulating a deeper understanding of their work. Perhaps best known for his work on the “Alien” movie series, HR Giger’s biomechanical creatures, technosexual sceneries and extraterrestial landscapes are part of a disturbing and nightmarish future hellworld. Sorayama’s work approaches organic beauty and sexuality from a machine-centered viewpoint, as well as a much brighter, positive perspective. Together with a foreword by curator Alessio Ascari, an essay by Venus Lau as well as interviews with Giger (by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Patrick Frey) and Sorayama (by Ascari) in English and Japanese, “Giger x Sorayama” offers a deeply stimulating dive into visions of eternal life and the breakdown of machine/organism dichotomies.
