Keiichi Tanaami: Adventures in Memory
Six decades of wild, dynamic images: a look into the fantastic mind of Keiichi Tanaami through more than 600 spectacular color plates.
This catalog accompanies the major retrospective exhibition of Keiichi Tanaami's work, "Adventures in Memory," at the National Art Center, Tokyo, from August 7 to November 11, 2024.
In eleven chapters and over 400 pages, "Adventures in Memory" looks back at the oeuvre of Keiichi Tanaami (1936-2024). Across genres and styles, Tanaami has been a leading figure in Japan's underground art world since the 1960s. In addition to more than 600 illustrations of his work, "Adventures in Memory" explores Tanaami's creative journey (which includes design, art direction, animation, painting, silkscreen, collage, and collaborations with artists and fashion brands) and the historical background of his work in five in-depth essays written by art historians, critics, and curators, including Sarah Suzuki (Associate Director, MoMA NY) and Natsu Onodera (Curator, National Art Center, Tokyo). Produced in full collaboration with the artist, "Adventures in Memory" is not only an exploration of Tanaami's life's work, but also an embodiment of his imagination and creativity.
Other texts include an opening essay by Keiichi Tanaami on his childhood and artistic inspiration, and an interview with Tanaami.
