A1 - The Great North Road
MACK Book’s re-release of Paul Graham’s 1983 debut photobook “A1 – The Great North Road.”
When it was published in 1983, Paul Graham’s “A1 – The Great North Road” had a profound and lasting impact on the British photography scene (which included no dedicated publishers or distributors at the time), paving the way for a new generation of British color photographers. Traveling along the A1, which spans the entire length of England, from London to Edinburgh, Graham spent two years capturing early 1980s Britain in photographs of landscapes, buildings and people.
This 2020 re-release pays tribute to the importance of Graham’s work both as art and as historical document. In addition to Graham’s photographs, Rupert Martin’s 1983 essay “On The Verge” and Graham’s original afterword, this re-release also includes a short retrospective text by Graham written in May 2020.
