Sunlight, Vision, Hong Kong
In these turbulent times, where do people come from, and where do they go?
In “Sunlight, Vision, Hong Kong”, Japanese photographer Masumi Kura captured daily life as it appears in the streets of Hong Kong. In 74 medium-format photographs, she shows the seemingly normal life in a city facing serious and fundamental changes. Having visited Hong Kong several times since 1996 – when the city was still a British colony –, Kura is keen to the differences in the city’s streetlife in which the new situation may manifest itself. In addition to the photographs, Kura also includes five photograms in the book created during the Corona pandemic using Hong Kong-related objects, as well as a longer text in which she reflects on her relationship with Hong Kong and her identity as a photographer (all texts included in Japanese and in English translation).
“I wondered if it were possible for a Japanese photographer, like myself, to empathize with the local people who are currently living through difficult times and the result is this book in which I present a candid record of everyday life there.”
