Sakasu no jikan
Born in Tokyo, 1940, Seiichi Motohashi’s visual works include his documentaries Nadya’s Village and the photobook of the same title, awarded the Ken Domon Award in 1998. Originally published in 1976, Motohashi Seiichi’s Circus is a 2013 reprint which brings together a visual document of Japan during a time which marked both the cultural and economic shift in the country’s postwar era. Motohashi captured both the stage and audience lured by the pleasures of performance and entertainment. The images provide a unique opportunity for viewers to glimpse back at a time where circus troupes in Japan where at its height in popularity.
