Australia-based Dutch artist Wouter Van de Voorde’s photobook “Nucleo” is a family album. Through its nonchronological, subversive layout, Van de Voorde traces the life of his own family; everything in the book is tied together by this core, by his nuclear family. But Van de Voorde does not shy away from complex questions or uncomfortable themes. “Nucleo” is marked by a sense of isolation, and alludes to the difficulties faced by the increasingly volatile ecosystem that surrounds the family. With a background in painting, Van de Voorde’s photographic approach imbues the series with various recurring symbols and metaphors, lending the images themselves as well as the series as a whole a deeply layered sense of time.
“Atop a nearby hill, a structure marking its peak stands; it resembles the skeleton of an archetypal house shape. This skeletal form represents a metaphor for our life here—being inside a house without walls but feeling protected and cared for by the landscape.
Nucleo comprises a decade’s worth of photographs, the most recent of which was captured in September 223. Celia, Felix, Flora, and Wouter are members of the same family.”
