Fushikaden (New Edition)

Fushikaden (New Edition)

Issei SUDA

Publisher: Akio Nagasawa Publishing

This is the 2024 reprint of "Fushikaden" by the late Japanese photographer Issei Suda (1940-2019). Like the 2012 edition, also published by Akio Nagasawa Gallery, the 2024 edition includes all 138 photographs selected by Suda instead of the 100 photographs of the original 1978 edition.

Originally published in eight issues of Camera Mainichi magazine between December 1975 and December 1977, Issei Suda's "Fushikaden" features photographs taken in Tokyo as well as in the rural regions of Tohoku, Hokuriku, and Kanto. In the aggressive, high-contrast light of the Japanese summer sun, Suda wanders into the netherworld of everyday life, capturing a Japan torn between the promises of modernity and the wounds of the past. His poetic, surreal images do not rely on tricks or gimmicks, but come alive through Suda's precise and subtle framing.
This reissue is published to coincide with Fushikaden's Summer 2024 exhibition at the Centre d'art GwinZegal in France.

“Like I am now in my 70s and will never be 30 again, the Japanese people will never be the people again that they used to be (…)
Some things are only feasible at a certain time, but getting to realize that is something that always only happens in the future. This is exactly the thought that crosses my mind when browsing through this second edition of Fushikaden.”
― from Issei Suda’s afterword (originally written for the 2012 edition)
