Solitude Standing
"Solitude Standing" is published on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Japanese photographer Ichiro Kojima. Born in Aomori in 1924, Ichiro Kojima captured life in the harsh environment of the Tohoku region of northern Japan.
Kojima's life was cut short at the young age of 39. Although his career lasted only ten years, he left behind a dramatic world in photographs that still resonate today. In this publication, Tokyo-based roshin books focuses on the aspect of solitude in Kojima's work. "Solitude Standing" includes many previously unpublished works held by the Aomori Museum of Art.
The book includes a separate volume titled "Evening Sun in Tokyo," which focuses on the few works Kojima created during his time in Tokyo. The poignant and frustrating emotions directed at the urban sunsets speak directly to the viewer's heart. Despite his attempts to distance himself from the images of Tsugaru, Kojima could never escape the persistent images of Tohoku that followed him everywhere.
Behind the Tokyo sunsets Kojima captured with his camera, one could see the serene snowy landscape of Tsugaru, where the snow continued to fall silently.
