Rohan Hutchinson photographed his “Encounters” series in the Victorian Alps in southeastern Australia. Over the course of two years, Hutchinson surveyed, observed and documented the landscape, capturing its differences between various seasons and weather conditions. Hutchinson, whose photographic work also includes detailed architectural observations in cities such as Tokyo, is able to explore the unique environment of the High Country on micro and macro levels and in images that range from concrete nature to ethereal, almost transcendent visions.

“In the early phases of this project, my trajectory quickly changed; in field-work, reading the environment through a Eurocentric seasonal calendar proved ineffective, and the encounters with the macro and micro-environment exposed a new unseen landscape. Weather conditions, previously assumed, shifted without notice, and the changing transformation presented a unique environment of uncertainty and fragility.

What began with an investigation into ecology and geology quickly became self-reflective.”
