Bacon Ice Cream
Ten years after the start of his career, Japanese photographer Yoshiyuki Okuyama collaborated with Taiwanese star designer Aaron Nieh on a new version of his 2015 hit photobook “Bacon Ice Cream.”
Compared to the highly saturated, energetic feeling of the Japanese original, Nieh’s design appraoch is more deconstructive and diffuse in spirit. Featuring two different paper types bound together through a special stitching process, the structure of the updated “Bacon Ice Cream” features the lightness and creative freedom of a niche publication, with its content dedicated entirely to Okuyama’s photography.
Composed of photographs across all genres, from personal artworks to works made for commercial clients, “Bacon Ice Cream” captures a kaleidoscopic experience of youth—the lights, colors, shapes of the world in countless fragments and moments. With Aaron Nieh’s updated design, Okayama’s vision is ready for a new audience.
“Stuck in the daily quandary between the dictions and the contras, I lean toward the one today and the other tomorrow, and before I knew it, there are things that I am creating while busily running back and forth between the two. After all, that’s what creativity seems to mean in my case: hopping from one extreme to the other and back again.
A mix of reality and fiction.
Consciousness and unconsciousness.
Deliberation and impulse.
Coolness and passion.
Light and shadow.
If there exists a boundary between documentary and fiction, where exactly is it?”
― from Yoshiyuki Okuyama’s statement
