“That saturation of magnificent signs bathed in the light of the absence of explanation” – this sentence of Manoel de Oliveira’s on his mind, Japanese photographer Ryuhei Yokoyama wandered the streets of Tokyo to shoot images of unaffected still objects in the city. Following de Oliveira’s words, his objects are saturated in a simple, honest light inside his mysterious, quiet photos.

Ryohei Yokoyama shot the photographs in “A beauty as like written on paper scraps rolling in the wind, graffiti history of both light and dancing rat” between 2012 and 2018 in a constant cycle of photographing and exhibiting his work. In this process, his interest gradually shifted towards messy scenes, images and graffiti. The book includes works published in two editions of the zine “Toshi to Mono” (The City and Things) as well as previously unpublished works.
