Robert ADAMS
ロバート・アダムスは1937年生まれ。カリフォルニアで教育を受け、英語教師を長年務めたあと、1967年から真剣に写真に取り組むように なります。 主に郊外の住宅街、ドライブイン、高速道路、ショッピングセンターなどを撮影し、 都市化により変化する自然風景の表現が主要テーマです。 いままでにコロラド、デンバー、ロサンゼルスなどの変貌を撮影してきました。彼の風景写真の特徴は、自分自身の判断や意見を完璧に削ぎ落とした冷徹な客観性です。 そのアプローチはミニマルアートの美意識と対比されたり、人の手によって変化する自然を取り上げていることから現代アメリカ社会のドキュメントと評価されることもあります。 エコロジー、都会の混乱、環境問題などの実情を美しいモノクロ写真を通して暗喩しているのです。 1975年にジョージ・イーストマンハウスでウイリアム・ジェンキンズに より企画された“ニュー・トポグラフィックス（地勢学）・人が変えた風景”展 にルイス・ボルツ、ステーブン・ショアー、ベッヒャー夫妻などとともに 選出されています。人工の風景を写し出す彼等の作品は、モダン写真の巨匠であるアンセル・アダムス、エドワード・ウェストン、マイナー・ホワイトらのドラマティクな自然の美とまったく 異なることで注目されました。
これまでに "The New West","From the Missouri West", "Summer Nights","Los Angeles Spring","To Make It Home","Listening to the River","West From the Columbia","What We Bought","Notes for Friends"," California" などの写真集を刊行するとともに、グッゲンハイム、マッカーサー財団などの奨学金を受けています。 現在では写真分野というより現代アートの流れの中で高く評価されています。 彼の作品は世界中の美術館やギャラリーで広く展示、コレクションされています。
