作家自身の人生や人間関係から生まれ、自身も被写体として登場するナン・ゴールディンの作品は、現代アートにおける写真の役割を一変させた。彼女の写真や動画作品は、アイデンティティ、愛、セクシュアリティ、中毒、死といった本質的なテーマを扱っている。1980年代からHIV/AIDSの流行に立ち向かい、現在は過剰摂取の危機に国際的な関心を寄せている。

1953年にワシントンDCで生まれ、ボストン郊外で育つ。14歳で家を出て、16歳でマサチューセッツ州リンカーンのサティヤ・コミュニティ・スクールに入学。ボストンのトランスジェンダー・コミュニティに住む友人たちの美しさ、弱さ、喜びを伝えるゴールディンの初期のモノクロ写真は、1973年にマサチューセッツ州ケンブリッジのプロジェクト・インクで開催された初の個展で発表された。1974年からボストン美術館のスクールに通い、主にシバクロームプリントと35mmスライドを使い、飽和色の写真を撮り始める。

1978年にニューヨークに移り住んだゴールディンは、ニューウェーブ・クラブ、ノーウェーブ映画、ストーンウォール以降のゲイ・カルチャーといった環境の中で、自分が選んだ家族のメンバーを記録し始めた。歓楽と友情、親密さと喪失の瞬間をとらえたこの作品群に、クルト・ヴァイルとベルトルト・ブレヒトによる『The Threepenny Opera』(1928年)の一節にちなんで『The Ballad of Sexual Dependency』というタイトルをつけた。この作品は常に進化を続け、折衷的なサウンドトラックを伴った約700枚のスライドからなるマルチメディア・プレゼンテーションに成長した。当初はナイトクラブで投影されたが、1980年のタイムズスクエアショー、1985年のホイットニー・ビエンナーレ、その他世界中の美術館で開催された数え切れないほどの展覧会に出品された。1986年には、ゴールディンの数ある著書の最初の一冊としてAperture社から出版され、最近、21度目の再版がなされた。
