アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソン
Henri CARTIER-BRESSON
アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソンは、セーヌ＝エ＝マルヌ県シャンテループ＝アン＝ブリーに生まれ、早くから絵画、特にシュルレアリスムに強い憧れを抱く。1932年、コートジボワールで1年を過ごした後、ライカに出会い、以後ライカを愛用するようになる。1933年、ニューヨークのジュリアン・レヴィ・ギャラリーで初の個展を開催。その後、ジャン・ルノワールと映画を撮る。
1940年に捕虜となり、1943年に3度目の脱走を試み、その後、捕虜や脱走者を支援する地下組織に加わる。1945年、プロのジャーナリストたちとパリの解放を撮影し、ドキュメンタリー『Le Retour（The Return）』を撮影。
1947年、ロバート・キャパ、ジョージ・ロジャー、デビッド'チム'シーモア、ウィリアム・ヴァンディヴェールとともにマグナム・フォトを設立。東洋を旅した3年後の1952年、ヨーロッパに戻り、最初の写真集『Images à la Sauvette』（英語版『The Decisive Moment』）を出版。
「私にとってカメラはスケッチブックであり、直感と自発性の道具であり、視覚的な用語で言えば、質問と決定を同時に行う瞬間の支配者である。手段を節約することで、シンプルな表現に到達することができる」
1968年からは写真活動を縮小し、ドローイングと絵画に専念。2003年、妻、娘とともにパリにアンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソン財団を設立し、作品の保存に努める。カルティエ＝ブレッソンは非常に多くの賞や名誉博士号を授与された。2004年8月3日、96歳の誕生日を数週間後に控え、プロヴァンスの自宅で死去。
