Untitled Records (BankART1929)
Keizo Kitajima began to photograph for his “Untitled Records” series in 2002 and began to publish it in a series of 20 zines in 2014. This photobook, featuring 168 photographs from the series, collects the vision of Kitajima’s complex series in a single volume.
Traveling all over Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south, Kitajima visited abandoned places and landscapes dotted with traces of disaster, destruction and decline and photographed them with a consistent perspective and attitude. Kitajima’s photographs examine a reality that has turned into something unfamiliar, a complex, overwhelming fabric that may evade objective, truthful understanding even if observed from a multitude of perspectives. The “Untitled Records” series is a visual document of this new era and reality that allows us to reflect on the past and the future.
The book concludes with an essay by curator Takahashi Shigemi about Kitajima’s “Untitled Records” series (all texts included in Japanese and in English translation).
