Unseen Land
“We have never asked nature what it thinks and if it is alright” – artist’s note
Hyongryol Bak’s photobook “Unseen Land” (published on occasion of the 10th ILWOO Photography Award exhibition) showcases two of the Korean artist’s series – Captured Nature (2010-2012) and Figure Project (2013-) – and his ingenious, multi-layered interventions with nature.
The title “Unseen Land” referring to invisible or unknown spaces, Bak uses geometric and artificial shapes to introduce us to an appearance of nature we have not seen before. Through various (thoughtful and imaginative) techniques, Bak interjects and toys with human artificiality in natural spaces, probing deeply into the meaning of established owner-owned relationships and revealing humankind’s inferiority to nature.
