The Photo, Coming Home
Where has photography been? In his new book, "The Photo, Coming Home," Masafumi Sanai not only leaves this question unanswered, he does not even ask it. The important thing is that it's back. Sanai, whose pure yet enigmatic style has resulted in numerous fascinating series since he began working as a photographer in the 1990s, presents an understated yet intriguing vision of Japan's contemporary urban and suburban landscapes. Roads and streets and signs and buildings and visual clutter, captured with a kind of loving grace. Clear to see, yet too ambiguous to fully comprehend.
The book concludes with a short story by Japanese writer Kazushi Hosaka.
“Shiro knew the joy of observing. Shiro was not driven by instinct to watch, but did it for the joy.”
