Painter
The comic “Painter” is the sequel to 2018’s “Cameraer” by Tokyo-based photographer and painter Hiroshi Nomura. Set in a world of camera-fied beings and metaphorical characters, “Painter” explores themes such as the nature of photography versus painting and the creative process (and its many tribulations). Earnest but not without humor, Nomura maintains the comic-strip format of “Cameraer” but embeds his individual episodes within an overarching story. Throughout the comic, Nomura includes several of his paintings (exhibited in 2024 at POETIC SCAPE gallery in Tokyo) in the back- and foreground of the panels. “Painter” includes a separate volume with more information about Nomura’s paintings as well as in-depth commentary by art critic Minoru Shimizu. All texts included in Japanese and English.
