A photobook by Naohiro UTAGAWA from the photographer collective “spew”. In January 2017, his work has been exhibited as part of a 6-person group exhibition called “Lumix Meets Beyond 2020” at IMA Gallery in Tokyo. During the same period, Utagawa presented his personal exhibition “Assembly” at ‘QUIET NOISE arts and break’ gallery in Tokyo. UTAGAWA relies on his own unique aesthetic sense to arrange tools and other things he has picked up and collected, and employs his photography to document the works as well as their creation process. The act of photographing becomes part of the installation process. As a result, his photography explores the relationship between installation art and photography and challenges spatial expression. The book has been created in a low print run of only 15 copies.
“When I create my works, in general I do not work towards a consciously chosen goal. Rather than the purpose or intention of the photographed statues and three-dimensional objects, it is the question of ‘why do I create, why do I produce something new’ that is more important. From the results, I may be able to discover the reason why I was interested in the things that I created.”
