YARD
A photobook by Naohiro UTAGAWA from the photographer collective “spew”. The works in YARD have been exhibited as part of a 6-person group exhibition called “Lumix Meets Beyond 2020” at IMA Gallery in Tokyo in January 2017. UTAGAWA relies on his own unique aesthetic sense to arrange tools and other things he has picked up and collected, and employs his photography to document the works as well as their creation process. The act of photographing becomes part of the installation process. As a result, his photography explores the relationship between installation art and photography and challenges spatial expression. The book has been created in a low print run of only 15 copies.
“While there is no real finish to the work and it is not clear exactly what it is that I am after, but I aim to show contradictions and conflicts within myself. I see my creation process as a personal game for myself, and try to find ways that allow me to share this sense of playing with others.”
