Everyday Tokyo 2021
The photobook “Everyday Tokyo 2021” is the third entry to Shoshi Okamoto’s ongoing series of photographs taken in the streets of Tokyo, following “Tokyo Sumer 2020” and “Tokyo 1985”. Okamoto, who learned photography at the Tokyo Photographic College (now Tokyo Visual Arts College) under the master photographers Daido Moriyama and Masahisa Fukase, captured the new everyday sceneries of a Tokyo that has adapted to the new “new normal” dictated by the ongoing Corona pandemic. Shot in black-and-white using wide angles, Okamoto’s photographs show streets sparsely populated – as if at random – by a scattered few masked pedestrians; a city on hold, slowed down but anxious to spring back to normal.
